Permissions is a grant of rights for your use of an excerpt from copyrighted material that you intend to use in another work.  Examples of this include: a short quotation / passage, poem, chart, short story, etc. from an Alight publication that you wish to use in: another book or publication, corporate newsletter, curriculum (as photocopies) for classroom use and more. Requests to use material from adult trade books, features or articles published by Alight USA are handled by our Contracts, Copyrights and Permissions Department.  Written permission is required to reprint or reproduce any material published by Alight.

Before submitting your request, please examine the Alight book or publication, including the copyright and acknowledgement page(s).  If the book is an anthology or a collection of various authors' works, review the copyright and acknowledgement page(s), as well as the front and back matter to locate the information pertaining to the original source of the material—and direct your request to that party.  If the book is a paperback, check the copyright page carefully; if the copyright page indicates the paperback was published by arrangement with another publisher, you will need to request permission from the original (hardcover) publisher.

Please include the following with your written request:

Title, author and ISBN of the Alight book you are interested in, as well as the Imprint, Division etc. of our book (if applicable).
The exact material you wish to reprint.
Title and author of your book.

Planned print run for your book [or, the total number of copies to be printed]
Publication date and price of your book.
Your complete contact information including: mailing address, e-mail, phone and fax numbers.
A self-addressed, stamped envelope for our reply would be most appreciated.

NOTE: In the event Alight distributes books for another publisher(s), permission to reprint from these books must be obtained from the actual publisher, rather than Alight. Before submitting a request, please check to see if the material to be used is credited to another source. If this is the case, permission must be obtained from the credited source rather than from Alight. Credits may appear with the material, in a separate acknowledgments section at the beginning or end of the chapter in which the material appears; or in a separate acknowledgments section in the front or the back or the book.
All requests, however received are handled in chronological order.  Titles requiring staff research may take extended times to process.  More common titles should be handled in a shorter time frame.  All contracts require original signatures and are sent out via regular mail.

FOREIGN AND SUBSIDIARY RIGHTS

Thanks for your interest in subsidiary rights.  Our subsidiary rights department will be traveling the world this year to sell rights from our list for translation, audio, book club, electronic, video, dramatic performance, film/television and reprints. We are happy to discuss our list of licensed products as well as titles you can review for possible licensing.  To find out where we’ll be in 2011, check out our 2011 Events Schedule. Listed are upcoming book fairs and trade events we will be attending.

For subsidiary rights licenses, foreign language translation rights, film & television rights,  please use our Online Inquiry form or contact us by phone or fax at: (212) 316-1017.

REVIEW COPIES

If you are interested in receiving a review copy of any of our books for licensing purposes, please use our Online Inquiry Form.

* We prefer you have a publisher before we consider your request. If you do not have a publisher for your book, please do not apply for permission at this time.  Granting permission requires full publishing details. Once you have a signed contract with a publisher, we will be better able to handle your permissions request.
