Alight is active against Piracy.  Please Join Us by Reporting Pirated Content Here.

Alight is taking an active role in stopping pirated content. Those that are in copyright violation are notified, and instructed to remove the infringing download or text. While this is an important step in mitigating the problem, there is no way to stop piracy at its source, but work can be done to lessen the number of people posting illegal content. We are grateful for the benefit of loyal fans who support our efforts to end content theft. This page is therefore offered so that concerned readers and authors can report infringements, and stop the problem at its source. Authors work hard to produce books that give others enjoyment; it is only fair to help protect what they have created. If authors stop creating good books, what would the world be like? Alight and our authors thank you for taking an active role in ensuring continued enjoyment of books for current and future readers.

Please use the form below to report incidents of piracy, providing all the information requested. If you would like to learn more about identifying links that may constitute infringement, please refer to this support document.
Identifying Links for Take Down  (Support Document)
Not all links to books, games, movies, etc. that you find online actually need any kind of take down action. Digimarc Guardian receives many requests to send take down notices on links that are not actually copies of books. Many sites intentionally fool users in order to trap them in scams. This page provides some pointers that can help you distinguish the 'good' links that require action from bogus ones that do not.

Easy Rules to Remember:

If the file size isn't stated, it's probably not a link that points to an actual book.
If the file size is less than 40K - 50K, you can be virtually sure it's not a book. Most books are a least a 3MB or more.
If the link points to a file that has been removed, no action is necessary.
If you have to pay to download BEWARE (as opposed to paying to get faster download speeds or less waiting).
Paying to download most likely means you're dealing with a scam and the download doesn't point to an actual copy of a book.

Additional information and examples are described below.

Sponsored Links
The biggest source of bogus links are sites filled with so-called "sponsored links". These sites have a sponsored link for everything. No matter what you search for, they will claim to have it. BEWARE! Also, the 'links' will simply repeat whatever phrase you searched for. Typically, the results will be presented at the top of the page and separated from other results.

We have found in the past that if you do pony up a credit card and register, they give you nothing and fraudulent charges will immediately start to appear on your credit card.  The easiest identifier for these links other than "sponsored links" is that they never state the size of the download...they instead state the speed of the download.  They do this because they don't know what you are looking for. It could be a book, a movie, a game, or something else...and as such they don't know what size to make the file to make you think its what you want.  Instead they claim amazing speeds to ensure you'll get whatever it is fast.
Book Reviews
The second largest number of bad links point to very small files that are actually short "reviews" of a book. They are not the full book. These are often described as "5 Star Reviews" or "eBay Best Seller" downloads. One or several people creates and posts these files on popular file sharing sites like docstoc and 4shared and they are intentionally designed to attract people looking for free, full copies.

One simple way to identify these bogus links: the file size is usually not larger than 40K or 50K and just over a page long (including a picture of the front cover). Files containing entire books will always be much larger than this (typically 3MB -10MB. It can sometimes be hard to idenfity these links without downloading them, but checking the file size typically works well.

Dead Links
It's not uncommon to find links to book downloads on blogs and other web sites that don't actually host the file for download. In order to see whether the link requires any action, you need to click on the link to confirm the file is still available for download. Many times, the file on the file sharing site has already been identified and taken down, but the link on the blog or other page hasn't been updated to remove the link. This happens frequently.

If the file download has been removed, the links that point to it won't result in an illegal download, so no take down action is necessary. We thank you again for joining Alight in the fight against piracy.
